Archaeologists found the oldest batik in China, Japan, Egypt, Southern Nigeria, Senegal, India, and several southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, from over 2,000 years ago. It was brought mainly by merchants through the silk road from Africa and Egypt.

"Hari Batik National" or Batik Day is a celebration of Indonesian batik, marks the anniversary of UNESCO recognized Indonesian batik as Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on October 2nd, 2009.

Batik is the wax-resist dyeing technique on a piece of fabric. It is created by either hand-drawn, stamp or print. Wax was applied over and over again to create layers of colors.

Hand drawn technique requires a spouted tool called "canting." The stamping technique uses a copper stamp called "cap." Finally, the print technique acquires by machine, similar to fabric print in the Western world.
